Where to Escape the Crowds in Vietnam: Quiet Spots You’ll Love
By JetSetGo Travel & Tour
Let’s be honest — Vietnam is stunning, but if you’ve already imagined squeezing through Hanoi’s Old Quarter or dodging selfie sticks at Halong Bay, you’re not alone. While the big names draw the biggest crowds, the real magic of Vietnam often lies in the quieter corners — the peaceful towns, scenic hideaways, and off-grid gems that haven’t made it to every travel brochure.
At JetSetGo Travel & Tour, we don't think that all travelers are looking for chaos and commotion. Some of us desire peace, local character, and room to breathe. If that is you, then here are our top recommendations for destinations in Vietnam where you can appreciate the beauty of the nation without the crowd.
1. Ha Giang – The Untouched Northern Frontier
North far and near the Chinese border is Ha Giang, Vietnam's final great frontier. While beautiful but sometimes crowded Sapa is, Ha Giang is uncooked, out-of-the-way, and simply stunning. Sweeping limestone karst mountains, curving mountain roads, and vibrant hill tribes villages characterize the scenery here.
It’s a road-tripper’s dream. Hire a motorbike (or get a local guide) and take the Ha Giang Loop for jaw-dropping views, warm local hospitality, and serene valleys. Bonus? You’ll barely see any tour buses.
2. Phong Nha – The Quieter Side of Adventure
Yes, it's home to the world's largest cave (Son Doong), but for some reason Phong Nha stays low-key and relaxed. Ringed by karst mountains and dense jungle, this national park town is perfect for those who desire adventure without excitement.
Hike to Hang En, paddle through Dark Cave, or simply lounge on the river with a local coffee. It's tranquil, budget-friendly, and still like a secret.
3. Quy Nhon – Coastal Calm Without the Tourists
If you’ve dreamed of a quiet beach in Vietnam but can’t deal with the crowds in Da Nang or Nha Trang, head to Quy Nhon. This sleepy coastal town boasts golden beaches, turquoise bays, and seafood so fresh it almost bites back.
Its beaches remain largely deserted, and the hills surrounding Quy Nhon have great hiking and cycling trails. Look forward to endless beaches of sand, fishing villages, and a relaxed atmosphere that makes you remember how Vietnam used to be.
4. Ninh Binh – Similar to Halong Bay, but Much Quieter
Ninh Binh is referred to as "Halong Bay on Land" because it is filled with towering limestone peaks, winding rivers, and fields that turn a different color with each season. But unlike Halong, however, there's room here — and fewer boats.
Have a serene sampan boat ride along Trang An, bike along temples and goats in Tam Coc, or trek up Hang Mua Viewpoint for views with much less crowds. It's picturesque, serene, and relatively near Hanoi — only two hours on the train.
5. Con Dao Islands – Isolated Island Life at Its Finest
You probably haven't heard of the Con Dao Islands. Neither have most people, which makes it so unique. Off the southern coast, there is a series of islands that boasts pristine beaches, coral reefs, and crystal waters — without the tourists.
Con Dao is also a location steeped in history, with old prison camps and a spiritual serenity that permeates the island. From snorkeling, to meditating on the beach, to observing baby turtles break from their shells, it's nature in all its raw form.
6. Pu Luong Nature Reserve – Rice Terraces and Silence
Done with the Sapa tourists? Visit Pu Luong. Nestled among mountains a few hours northwest of Hanoi, this nature reserve contains verdant rice terraces, isolated homestays, and trails that weave through ethnic Thai villages.
The good news? It's still under the radar. You'll probably be trekking through bamboo groves and having tea on a wooden deck without a single tourist anywhere to be seen. If you want to be certain that you really have escaped, this is the place.
7. Ba Be Lake – Vietnam's Secret Freshwater Treasure
Another gem of the north, Ba Be Lake is within a national park that is both culturally and biologically rich. Imagine serene waters under limestone cliffs, waterfalls, and dense forests.
Things move at a slow pace here. You can stay in a homestay with the Tay villagers, paddle through the lake, or trek into the surrounding caves and jungles. It's untouched, unhurried, and unforgettable.
8. Mekong Delta Backwaters – Go Beyond the Floating Markets
Though Cai Rang and Phong Dien markets in Can Tho are favorites, there's a less frenetic, more real Mekong Delta side. Places like Ben Tre and Vinh Long provide boat trips down palm-fringed canals, gentle cycling options, and the sort of experiences that ring absolutely true.
Have lunch in an ordinary home, discover how coconut candy is produced, or simply appreciate the relaxed rhythm of riverside existence — free of the tourist busloads.
9. Tay Ninh – Culture and Serenity Near Saigon
Only a couple of hours from Ho Chi Minh City, Tay Ninh is a quiet oasis with plenty to see. Stop by the Cao Dai Temple, which is a bright and quirky spiritual destination, or trek up Ba Den Mountain for breathtaking views of the plains below.
Since most people bypass it for the bright lights of the city, you're able to experience Vietnam's nature and culture with little disturbance.
